A little section about Rei, with some basic informations on her and her development in the story; please note that this article is heavily filled with SPOILERS of every kind.
Rei Ayanami is a 14 years old girl attending Neo-Tokyo 3 First Municipal Junior High School in class 2-A; quiet and elusive, she's not used to attract people's attention nor seems to appreciate it.
She lives in a little appartment in the old side of the city, in the suburbs, and its look is extremely poor and messy, describing a person who doesn't really care of herself nor her surroundings.
 Rei is designated pilot of EVA Unit 00 and she responds to the codename First Children, implying that she's been the first person found fit to be an Eva's pilot by the Marduk Agency.
There's no available data on her, so nothing about her birthday, blood type or past is known or intended for public display.
Her behaviour seems particularly passive and unassertive thus letting Asuka nicknaming her "doll".
Despite this, she never backs off from accepting or offering herself in reckless missions or tasks non-chalantly; later in the series it'll be explained that this is because Rei longs for death as she sees her own existence empty and unworthy for exception as an EVA's pilot, thus implying that she'll be considered worth living as long as she'll pilot the EVA.
Lately this point of view will gradually change, letting her realize that her mission as a pilot is vital to protect others and that her current self is defined by the bonds and interaction she's able to mantain with other people and this identifies her current self as herself.
 During the series other little details are given over Rei, suggesting a series of interesting bits for her character's understanding: she said to dislike meat and that she hated the color red (the color of blood); she implied that she never dreamt during her sleep and that she loved things still and certain (mountains, sun).
Rei is usually depicted as a smart girl who is used to read books on difficult matters (when Asuka first introduced herself to Rei the girl was reading a book about genetics) and she's used to carry a little red agenda where she takes notes about her missions or other important bits of her life as a pilot.
She enjoys the contact with water and feels particularly at ease when surrounded or floating in liquids.
What's behind Rei Ayanami is the difficult role of being the test subject for the experiments related to the Project E since the beginning of the conception of the Human Completation Project by Yui Ikari and SEELE organization.
Rei is an actual artificially created being, molded into human shape by the clonation of Yui Ikari and the implantation of a portion of Lilith's soul to make her compatible with the Evangelion interface.
Rei's pattern is used to program the interface of the Dummy Plug, an artificial piloting system invented to replace the human pilot in case of necessity or danger.
Rei is also the key to the Human Completation, her body being one of the keys needed to develop Gendo's scenario.
Since her body's instability, Rei is forced to take special medicines on a daily bases; Doctor Ritsuko Agaki is the one who helps her with the somministrations and dosage.
Since her vital importance for the research Rei has various clones of herself stored in the Dummy System, located in the Central Dogma of NERV Headquaters; as far as we know three different Rei Ayanami appear in the series.
